Halving violence against women and girls within a decade necessitates a shift in culture, according to the minister in charge. Home Office Minister Alex Davies-Jones emphasized that the bravery of victims propels her efforts, stressing the importance of prioritizing the safety of women and girls in governmental initiatives.
During the Labour party conference in Liverpool, Ms. Davies-Jones shared that meeting survivors of sexual and domestic violence was both a privilege and a source of inspiration for her. She highlighted the need for collective action across government departments, such as Education, Health, Housing, and the DWP, to ensure the safety of women and girls nationwide.
The minister emphasized the importance of a 10-year strategy focused not only on financial support but also on driving cultural change and garnering public support through effective leadership and communication. Key policies in this drive include initiatives like Raneem’s Law, which places domestic abuse specialists in 999 control rooms and addresses issues like spiking, deep fake pornography, and ensuring disclosure for sexual abusers who change their names.
Last year, Keir Starmer pledged to halve violence against women and girls within a decade upon entering No10. Recent data revealed that nearly two in every 100 adults in England and Wales experienced sexual assault in the year leading up to March, with an estimated 900,000 individuals over 16 encountering sexual assault, attempted offenses, or domestic abuse during that period.
Ms. Davies-Jones expressed admiration for the remarkable women she has met, emphasizing how their strength motivates her to push for better outcomes. She acknowledged the emotional difficulty but underscored the empowerment and inspiration she derives from survivors, fueling her determination to advocate for improved policies and support systems.
Overall, the government’s commitment to combating violence against women and girls involves a multi-faceted approach that aims to instigate cultural change, enhance support services, and drive public awareness and engagement.
