Prince Harry surprised attendees at a veterans support event shortly after sharing his thoughts on British identity. The Duke made a virtual appearance at the Heroic Hearts Project Gala in California, a gathering dedicated to assisting veterans with PTSD. This unexpected cameo occurred just before Harry and Meghan were seen celebrating Kris Jenner’s 70th birthday at Jeff Bezos’ luxurious estate.
During the gala, Harry appeared on screen expressing words of encouragement and solidarity for all veterans. He emphasized the importance of authentic, veteran-driven support, stating, “The future entails embracing the next chapter with strength, unity, and a clear sense of purpose.” The former military man, who served in Afghanistan, donned military medals and a remembrance poppy on his suit in the video recorded outside his Montecito residence in California, where he now resides post-stepping down from royal duties in 2020.
Meanwhile, back in the UK, the Royal Family honored fallen soldiers on Remembrance Sunday. King Charles led the tributes by laying the first wreath at the Cenotaph, followed by Prince William, Queen Camilla, and the Princess of Wales.
Currently, the Princess of Wales is observing a moment of silence at 11 am to commemorate war heroes at an emotional event. Kate is at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire for Armistice Day, where she will lay a wreath and meet with military families and veterans.
Harry has refrained from participating in Cenotaph events since 2019 following his departure from the UK and royal duties in 2020. Instead, he engaged in Remembrance-related activities in Toronto recently, coincidentally overlapping with his brother Prince William’s commitments in Brazil.
In a personal essay titled ‘The Bond, The Banter, The Bravery: What it means to be British – By Prince Harry’, he reflected on his British roots despite residing in the US. Despite losing his military titles upon stepping back from royal obligations, Harry’s request to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph was turned down, as he was deemed a non-“frontline royal.”
According to royal commentator Jennie Bond, Harry felt disheartened by the refusal to allow him to pay respects remotely at the Cenotaph. She suggested that Harry’s current efforts to meet veterans and support military causes are his way of honoring his military past. Bond also noted the ongoing estrangement between Harry and William, speculating that reconciliation might be a distant prospect.
