Consumers gearing up for the upcoming Prime Day sales event are being advised to be cautious and vigilant to avoid falling victim to cyber scams. With cybercriminals actively seeking to exploit popular shopping occasions like Prime Day, shoppers need to be wary of fake offers, phishing emails, and fraudulent websites aimed at stealing personal information and financial data.
Security experts have raised concerns about the surge in newly registered Amazon-related web domains leading up to Prime Day. A report by Check Point’s security team revealed a significant increase in the creation of suspicious domains, with April witnessing the highest number of new domains, totaling 1,446.
The timing of this surge in malicious domain registrations is particularly alarming as scammers can use this period to establish a false sense of legitimacy for their fraudulent websites in preparation for Prime Day. Despite the majority of Amazon-themed domains being safe, around one in every 11 new domains were flagged as either malicious or suspicious.
Emphasizing the deceptive tactics employed by scammers, Check Point highlighted how Prime Day scams often mimic authentic shopping experiences, including familiar branding, convincing checkout processes, and urgent alerts. To stay protected, consumers are advised to scrutinize messages carefully, slow down the purchase process, and verify the legitimacy of websites before providing any personal information or making payments.
To stay safe while enjoying Prime Day deals, shoppers are urged to take simple precautions. These include verifying website URLs for authenticity, avoiding clicking on links from unsolicited emails or messages, and being cautious of unrealistically cheap deals or urgent alerts. Additionally, shoppers should be wary of messages claiming refunds or threatening account suspension and verify information directly through Amazon’s official website.
By following these safety measures, consumers can shop confidently during Prime Day without falling prey to scammers. Prime Day is scheduled to take place from June 23 to June 26, featuring a range of deals and offers that can be explored through various platforms.
