“Survey Reveals 80% of University Graduates Wished They Were Better Prepared for Student Life”

Starting university can be an exhilarating experience for many students, but a recent survey of 1,000 university graduates revealed that a significant 80% of them wished they had been more prepared for the realities of student life. Insights from the alumni highlighted the importance of essential items such as a doorstop to foster a friendly atmosphere and earplugs for peaceful sleep, particularly during Freshers’ Week.

Research conducted by EXTRA identified key items that are indispensable for new students, including a laundry basket to avoid a pile of clothes on the floor and cozy slippers for warmth without cranking up the heating. Additionally, recommendations ranged from flip flops for communal bathrooms to a supply of cold and flu remedies to combat the common “fresher’s flu.”

Apart from physical necessities, the survey underscored the significance of mental readiness. Many students expressed challenges in adapting to the social demands of university life, with social events posing a common stressor in the first year. Financial management also emerged as a major adjustment for a third of the respondents.

Navigating fresher’s societies and fostering new friendships were highlighted as areas of concern, with a third of students feeling uncertain about which societies to join and 31% expressing anxiety about building new social connections. To support students during this transition, a collaboration between a chewing gum brand and student wellbeing advocate, Ben West, offered practical advice to alleviate nerves during the initial weeks at university.

West emphasized the effectiveness of simple coping strategies like deep breathing, chewing gum, and outdoor walks to promote mental well-being and presence in the moment. Encouraging students to engage in social activities and keep an open mind towards meeting new people, he emphasized the importance of embracing the university experience with a positive attitude.

Incorporating small habits like chewing gum, deep breathing exercises, and engaging in social interactions can help students navigate the challenges of university life while making the most of their academic journey.
