Keir Starmer engaged in discussions with the architects of India’s digital identification system while endeavoring to justify the government’s contentious proposals. During his visit to Mumbai to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Starmer commended the system’s significant accomplishments.
In 2009, the Indian government initiated the registration of its one-billion-plus population into the Aadhaar system, assigning each individual a unique 12-digit personal identification number. Starmer met with Nandan Nilekani, a co-founder of Infosys, a prominent Indian tech company that contributed to the development of the ID platform.
Although the Indian system has been lauded for its achievements, there have been past instances of vulnerable individuals facing challenges, including difficulties in accessing essential resources like food rations due to system malfunctions.
The UK government is set to introduce a digital ID system by 2029 to verify individuals’ rights to reside and work in the country. However, public support for the initiative has waned since its announcement two weeks ago.
Responding to queries about public sentiment, Starmer emphasized the necessity of mandatory ID to tackle illegal employment issues. He also underscored the potential benefits of voluntary ID, presenting it as a means to streamline bureaucratic processes like school admissions and applications.
Starmer’s remarks were made upon his arrival in Mumbai, where he received a warm reception from the Indian government. Posters featuring Starmer and PM Modi adorned the city’s roads, welcoming the No10 delegation.
During his visit, Starmer engaged in various activities, including meeting with children participating in a football program supported by the Premier League. However, he refrained from commenting on whether he would urge Modi to cease purchasing Russian oil, emphasizing the UK’s steadfast support for Ukraine and its efforts to address the conflict through sanctions.
