“Texas AG Probes Children’s Underwear Chemical Concerns”

Must Read

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated an inquiry into the potential use of harmful chemicals in the manufacturing of children’s underwear by Fruit of the Loom and Hanes. Paxton has issued civil investigative demands to these companies, expressing concerns about the impact of these chemicals on children’s well-being. While no accusations have been made against either company, Fruit of the Loom and Berkshire Hathaway have not responded to Reuters’ requests for comments.

On the other hand, Gildan, the parent company of Hanes, has stated its willingness to cooperate with the investigation. They have emphasized their adherence to stringent manufacturing and sourcing standards to align with industry regulations concerning harmful substances. Gildan, which merged with HanesBrands Inc. for $2.2 billion last year, remains dedicated to delivering safe and top-quality products to consumers.

Attorney General Paxton highlighted the shift towards synthetic materials like polyester, rayon, and spandex in response to consumer demand for more affordable clothing. Research indicates that synthetic fabrics may release microplastics and potentially harmful chemicals such as bisphenols, fluorine, parabens, phthalates, and persistent chemicals linked to various health risks, including cancer and hormonal disruptions.

Paxton stressed the importance of safeguarding children, particularly given their vulnerability to such risks. He previously launched a similar investigation into Lululemon Athletica’s activewear for potential presence of “forever chemicals.” These substances, known as PFAS, are slow to degrade in nature.

The Texas attorney general’s actions come amidst his campaign for a U.S. Senate seat against Democrat James Talarico, a contest closely monitored leading up to the November 3 midterm elections. The investigation underscores the ongoing efforts to ensure that products essential for children are free from harmful substances, prioritizing their health and safety.
