“Macklemore to Headline ‘Free Palestine Tour’ for Aid”

Must Read

Macklemore is set to embark on his own tour following his removal as an opening act for Ed Sheeran’s U.S. tour leg, with all proceeds from the concerts being directed to organizations that support Palestinians.

The decision to drop Macklemore came after venue owners in the U.S. threatened to cancel Sheeran’s shows if the rapper continued as the opening act, as per a statement from the Messina Touring Group to Rolling Stone magazine.

Known for his longstanding pro-Palestinian stance, Macklemore has been vocal about his support for Palestinians on various occasions in the past.

In response to the situation, Macklemore expressed that the incident goes beyond individual artists or stages, highlighting concerns about powerful entities determining which voices are allowed to be heard. Following his removal from Sheeran’s tour, the rapper announced upcoming performances in Dublin, Paris, and London as part of the “Free Palestine Tour,” with additional U.S. dates to be revealed.

The upcoming shows are aimed at benefiting several Palestinian aid organizations, including Gaza Soup Kitchen, Palestinian Youth Movement, Jewish Voice for Peace, and UNRWA USA, the American arm of the UN agency dedicated to Palestinian refugees.

The controversy surrounding Macklemore’s performances unfolded during Sheeran’s Loop Tour, where the rapper made pro-Palestinian statements that drew criticism from Israeli advocacy groups. A series of events ensued, leading to Macklemore’s official removal from the tour, subsequent solidarity actions from other openers and band members, and public statements from key figures involved.

Macklemore, in response to the situation, pledged to donate all his earnings from the Loop Tour to humanitarian organizations aiding Gaza, prompting a donation commitment from businessman Robert Kraft. Sheeran, on his part, addressed the issue with fans during his tour, emphasizing his stance on activism in music.

The developments underscore the complexities at the intersection of art, politics, and activism in the music industry.
