Donald Trump is forming a coalition of antagonists to weaken the United Nations, with Tony Blair assisting in the endeavor.
The origins of Trump’s creation of this group can be linked to two key incidents. Firstly, in 2009, the Nobel committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to Barack Obama, a figure Trump strongly dislikes. This decision fueled Trump’s desire to attain a Nobel Prize himself, leading him to involve himself in efforts to end conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.
Initially focused on promoting peace in Gaza and facilitating its reconstruction, the Board of Peace expanded its objectives due to another significant event. During a visit to the United Nations last September, technical malfunctions during Trump’s speech fueled his belief that there was a conspiracy against him, further solidifying his disdain for the organization.
Tony Blair’s involvement in this coalition is somewhat enigmatic. He has a longstanding relationship with Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, and had been engaging in discussions with him regarding Gaza’s future before Trump assumed office. Despite concerns, Blair remains actively engaged in the initiative, even after the UK declined participation due to Russia’s involvement.
Trump recently unveiled the Board of Peace, emphasizing its global scope and his perpetual chairmanship. Notably, the alliance includes leaders such as Viktor Orban of Hungary and Javier Milei of Argentina, who have controversial backgrounds. Representatives from various countries, including Israel, also attended the launch event.
Among the 20 member nations, only two are classified as “free” by Freedom House, with the majority facing restrictions on political and civil liberties. Israel’s potential membership was hindered by Netanyahu’s absence, as he risks arrest for war crimes in Europe.
Trump’s apparent desire for enduring power is evident in his leadership of this coalition, seemingly fulfilling his aspirations of global dominance. The alliance, comprising controversial leaders and states, reflects Trump’s ambition to maintain influence beyond his presidency.
