“Trump Praises Xi, Criticizes Canada in Trade Talks”

Must Read

U.S. President Donald Trump warmly welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping this week, praising him as a “remarkable leader” and expressing interest in expanding an existing trade agreement to avoid tariffs and maintain a trade truce. Trump has touted successful trade deals with China and even suggested the possibility of Chinese automakers establishing factories in the U.S.

In contrast, Trump and his administration have criticized Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney for a smaller trade deal allowing the entry of 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles with reduced tariffs. U.S. officials expressed disappointment, with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick questioning Canada’s trade decisions.

Jia Wang, a senior fellow at the China Institute, highlighted the perceived inconsistency in how the U.S. demands trade concessions from partners while pursuing its own deals. Canadian trade with China surged in 2025 amid U.S. tariff pressures, but Canada’s trade volume with China would need significant growth to match U.S. import levels.

Sen. Rick Scott cautioned against Canada increasing trade with China, emphasizing the potential risks. However, critics pointed out that Florida, a state where Scott serves, imports more from China than Canada, illustrating the complexities of international trade relationships.

As discussions continue, experts like Mark Manger from the University of Toronto acknowledge the mixed signals in U.S. trade policies towards China and its allies. While Trump emphasizes strong economic ties with China, challenges persist in navigating the global market dynamics. Wang and Manger stress the importance for Canada to engage with both superpowers strategically and anticipate long-term implications in the evolving trade landscape.
