The list of appropriate items to carry to a job interview typically includes your resume, portfolio, positive demeanor, and professional attitude. However, a recent online controversy has emerged questioning the suitability of bringing an iced latte to such interviews. The debate was sparked by a viral TikTok video where a U.S. recruiter criticized Gen Z candidates for showing up with iced coffees, implying it portrays a lack of seriousness and professionalism.
The video, which garnered over 420,000 views, featured recruiter Caitlin Wehniainen expressing her view that bringing an iced beverage to an interview may give off a casual vibe, suggesting that the candidate sees the interview as just another errand on their schedule. This viewpoint has triggered mixed reactions among different generations and internet users, with some agreeing that it is unprofessional while others advocate for the right to enjoy a caffeinated drink.
The debate has extended beyond the coffee issue, with some arguing that it reflects broader societal challenges faced by young adults, such as navigating the aftermath of COVID-19 lockdowns, dealing with high youth unemployment rates, and adapting to the influence of AI on job prospects. The divide between generations has also been highlighted by other etiquettes like the “Gen Z stare,” a term describing the blank expressions often exhibited by younger individuals in certain settings.
Despite the debate, experts like Allison Venditti, a human resources specialist, emphasize that most candidates, regardless of generation, take job interviews seriously and arrive prepared. While bringing beverages like iced coffee to interviews is a rare occurrence, Venditti stresses the importance of maintaining professionalism throughout the process. Overall, the consensus leans towards refraining from bringing such casual items to interviews to ensure a focused and polished impression.
