“NASA Abandons Swift Observatory Rescue Mission”

Must Read

NASA’s efforts to rescue the Swift Observatory have been abandoned, leading to the telescope’s impending fiery re-entry later this year. Katalyst Space Technologies, in collaboration with NASA, revealed the decision to halt the mission after encountering issues with their Link spacecraft, which was dispatched to aid the observatory.

Due to challenges in controlling the spacecraft, Katalyst confirmed that Link will not proceed with capturing and repositioning Swift to a higher orbit. Consequently, the telescope, known for its study of cosmic phenomena like gamma ray bursts and supernovae over its 20-year lifespan, is expected to descend through the atmosphere, with its demise not anticipated before October.

In a bid to extend Swift’s operational life, NASA allocated $30 million to Katalyst. However, heightened solar activity caused the telescope to descend more rapidly than anticipated. The rescue spacecraft experienced difficulties shortly after its launch in July, entering an uncontrollable spin. Despite efforts to stabilize Link’s trajectory, operational issues persisted, preventing the intended mission success.

NASA’s administrator, Jared Isaacman, expressed disappointment over the outcome but emphasized the importance of pursuing the mission. Meanwhile, Katalyst intends to continue utilizing Link to showcase its capabilities for potential future rescue missions.

Swift, launched in 2004, had its scientific instruments deactivated earlier this year to mitigate its descent. Currently orbiting at 345 kilometers above Earth, Katalyst’s objective was to raise the telescope back to its original 600-kilometer orbit, enabling further astronomical observations.

The fate of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, which could benefit from a similar orbital adjustment due to its declining orbit caused by solar activity, remains uncertain following the Swift mission’s setback. If successful, Hubble was slated to be the next candidate for a rescue mission.
