“UK Urged to Transition to Digital Voice Before Copper Network Shutdown”

Must Read

In just half a year, a significant upgrade to the UK’s communication infrastructure is approaching rapidly, prompting numerous households to prepare for the forthcoming changes. Starting January 2027, the long-standing copper phone network in the UK will be permanently retired, making way for the introduction of Digital Voice, a modern communication platform that utilizes broadband connections for calls instead of traditional copper wiring that has been in use for over a century.

This transition is crucial for households to address promptly as failure to switch to Digital Voice could result in the loss of their current landline service. A recent awareness campaign titled ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch,’ led by Clare Balding, stressed the importance for households to verify their landline connections and ensure readiness for the digital era.

Although the nationwide deadline is six months away, the migration is gaining momentum. BT’s Openreach, the operator of the UK’s largest broadband network, has issued “stop sell” notifications at an additional 112 telephone exchanges. Consequently, broadband providers relying on the Openreach network, such as BT, Sky, Vodafone, and Plusnet, are no longer permitted to sell or switch customers to older copper-based broadband and phone services in those designated areas.

The implementation of “Stop Sell” occurs when a significant majority (75%) of premises serviced by a specific exchange can access ultrafast Full Fibre. Customers seeking to switch, upgrade, or change their broadband or phone services in these regions must transition to a new digital service over the advanced Full Fibre network.

The recent expansion of the program brings the total number of exchanges under the “Stop Sell” regime to 1,572, encompassing approximately 15.4 million homes and businesses nationwide. Despite the apparent challenges of transitioning to full fibre and Digital Voice, the shift promises notable advantages, including enhanced broadband speeds, more dependable connections, and an updated phone service better suited for the contemporary digital landscape.

Individuals uncertain about the impact on their residences can use the Openreach postcode checker to ascertain available services. James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, emphasized the significance of the “Stop Sell” initiative in expediting the UK’s transition to a cutting-edge full fibre infrastructure. By phasing out outdated copper-based services in areas where fibre solutions are widely accessible, the focus is on migrating customers and providers to faster, more reliable digital technologies to prepare for the impending switch-off of the legacy Public Switched Telephone Network in six months’ time, necessitating a universal shift to digital phone lines.
