“Unsolved ‘Mansion Murder’ Case Still Haunts Investigators”

Must Read

Nicknamed the “mansion murder,” the unsolved case of a wealthy architect found dead at his sprawling 50-room estate continues to baffle investigators. The mysterious death of Simon Dale, a 68-year-old visually impaired recluse, occurred in September 1987 at his secluded countryside residence.

Authorities launched a murder inquiry at Heath House in Hopton Heath, Shropshire, focusing on Dale’s ex-wife, Baroness Susan de Stempel, a member of the affluent Wilberforce family and descendant of anti-slavery advocate William Wilberforce. Dale and the Baroness had purchased the grand Jacobean mansion in 1972 using her funds, but their marriage dissolved in 1973.

Following the divorce, the Baroness struggled to sell the mansion, leaving Dale to reside there alone. He delved into research linking King Arthur to the estate, while the Baroness remarried Baron Michael de Stempel in 1984, only to divorce within a year.

Accused of Dale’s murder, the Baroness stood trial in 1989 but was acquitted due to lack of physical evidence. During the proceedings, she portrayed Dale as a problematic figure, alleging he was aggressive, neglectful, and had peculiar behaviors.

Amid the murder investigation, authorities unearthed another scheme orchestrated by the Baroness to defraud her elderly dementia-suffering aunt, Lady Margaret Illingworth, of £500,000, resulting in Lady Illingworth’s demise in 1986. The inheritance disappeared, and Lady Illingworth’s wishes were disregarded, leading to a destitute end for the once affluent widow.

In 1990, the Baroness was convicted of embezzling from Lady Illingworth and sentenced to seven years in prison. Although the stolen gold was never recovered, investigators maintain the Baroness as the prime suspect in both cases. The mysteries surrounding Simon Dale’s death and Lady Illingworth’s missing fortune endure, leaving unanswered questions in these intriguing tales.
