Athletes are taking the spotlight at the ongoing Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games in Corner Brook this week. Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of more than 300 volunteers, clad in orange shirts, are ensuring that everything runs smoothly.
The day marked a transition at the Games, as a new group of athletes arrived in the city. Sporting events are set to resume in the evening.
Duane Huxter, stationed at the Corner Brook Civic Centre, has been diligently organizing merchandise for the athletes, including folding t-shirts for over a week. Huxter shared with CBC News that what he initially thought would be a quick task turned into a prolonged commitment, with no time to return home since last Monday.
Volunteers play a vital role in various aspects of the Games, from collaborating with local authorities to manage logistics to overseeing activities at venues to ensure seamless operations.
Dave Campbell, the games director at SportNL and a member of the Games host committee, emphasized the importance of teamwork and community connections in the Games’ success.
Huxter acknowledged the significant effort involved in coordinating clothing for 10 teams but highlighted the impact it has on creating lasting memories for the athletes. Despite playing a modest role in events like the opening ceremonies, Huxter finds fulfillment in supporting athletes to excel.
Reflecting on his involvement in the Games, Huxter expressed satisfaction in witnessing athletes proudly don their team colors during the opening ceremonies, knowing the effort put into preparing their attire.
Volunteers, like Huxter, are dedicated to ensuring that athletes have a positive experience and leave the event with a sense of accomplishment and pride.
