“Wabush Airport to Resume Flights After Equipment Upgrades”

Must Read

After experiencing disruptions, Wabush Airport is set to restart flight operations on Wednesday, as confirmed by PAL Airlines. The airport faced flight cancellations due to its inability to meet federal firefighting and rescue requirements for commercial flights with over 19 passengers, resulting from a mechanical issue with a vehicle.

PAL Airlines announced via social media that the necessary firefighting equipment for passenger flights has been reinstated, allowing flights 921, 922, 833, and 834 to and from the airport to resume on Wednesday. Affected passengers will receive updated travel information from the airline’s reservations team regarding their flight arrangements.

Prior to the flight resumption, Labrador’s Member of Parliament expressed frustration over the repeated disruptions at the airport. However, he expressed hope that the latest issue would be resolved soon. The MP highlighted that maintenance on one of the airport’s two fire trucks and a part failure on the second truck led to the operational pause at the airport. Following the arrival of essential parts from Edmonton, operations were set to resume, with the MP calling for a review of the incident.

The recent disruptions add to a series of challenges faced by Wabush Airport over the past year. In October 2025, services at the airport were briefly suspended due to a change in its designation, requiring firefighting services that had been cut by Transport Canada five years earlier. Extreme weather in December further exacerbated issues, resulting in flight cancellations and passenger inconveniences.

Additionally, a notice issued in January of this year restricted the airport’s centerline, preventing PAL Airlines’ Q 400 aircraft from landing. The airline facilitated a charter flight to transport the necessary parts to Wabush and expressed readiness to resume commercial services once the airport could accommodate passenger flights.

Advocates for Safer Airports in Canada voiced concerns about the situation at Wabush, emphasizing the need for a more robust emergency response capability at Canadian airports. They called for increased resources, maintenance plans, and on-site mechanics for emergency repairs at airports to ensure preparedness for air traffic disasters.

The organization is actively engaging with stakeholders, politicians, and pilot associations to address concerns regarding emergency response capabilities at airports, stressing the importance of proper firefighting equipment in emergency scenarios. They highlighted the necessity of being adequately prepared for any unfortunate events that may occur.
