“Former Landmark Cinemas Head Appointed CEO of Cineplex amid Sale Exploration”

Must Read

Cineplex has announced the appointment of Bill Walker, the former head of Landmark Cinemas, as its new CEO and disclosed that the company is exploring the possibility of a sale. While expressing confidence in the company’s future, the board is actively assessing various options to enhance shareholder value.

A memo released on Wednesday stated that a Strategic Review has been initiated to evaluate opportunities for value optimization. This review will encompass a range of alternatives, including a potential sale of the company. Goldman Sachs and TD Securities have been enlisted as co-financial advisers for this strategic evaluation.

Cineplex, known as the largest cinema chain in Canada, operates over 1,600 movie screens in nearly 170 theaters nationwide, employing more than 10,000 individuals across its entertainment venues. The company previously faced a sale in 2019, with a $2.8-billion acquisition offer from the U.K.-based Cineworld Group PLC, which ultimately did not materialize.

During the strategic review process, former CEO Ellis Jacob will provide advisory support to the board. Phyllis Yaffe, the chair of Cineplex’s board, highlighted the company’s robust market position and leading entertainment assets, suggesting that the current market valuation may not fully reflect its business strength and future potential.

Bill Walker, with prior experience leading Landmark Cinemas and overseeing its sale to Kinepolis in 2017, expressed support for the strategic review. Regardless of the review’s outcome, Walker emphasized his commitment to driving operational excellence, ensuring exceptional guest experiences, and delivering superior results for shareholders.
