Morgan Klachefsky, a resident of Winnipeg, recalls a frightening incident when her son Simon, at just 18 months old, had a severe allergic reaction to a cashew. Rushed to the Winnipeg HSC Children’s Emergency Department, Simon was diagnosed with a life-threatening allergy to cashews and pistachios after his throat started to close up.
The incident left a lasting impact on Morgan, who was previously unaware of the dangers her son faced. Determined to protect Simon, she embarked on a journey to educate herself and others about managing his anaphylactic allergies. Despite her initial fears and anxieties, Morgan gradually learned to trust others with Simon’s care, allowing him to participate in social activities like play dates and birthday parties.
As Simon grew older, Morgan focused on empowering him to take responsibility for his own safety. Teaching him about his allergies, how to read labels, and administer an EpiPen, she emphasized the importance of vigilance and communication.
