Caroline Wozniacki defended Emma Raducanu’s remarkable US Open victory against John Isner’s comments suggesting another recent tennis upset overshadowed it. Raducanu, a British sensation, made history in 2021 by becoming the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows.
The 23-year-old teenager impressively won the championship without dropping a set in 10 consecutive matches, culminating in a thrilling final against Leylah Fernandez. Raducanu’s achievement was widely praised as one of the most remarkable in tennis history.
In a surprising turn of events, Valentin Vacherot, the Monaco-based player, became the lowest-ranked player ever to win a Masters title at Shanghai. Vacherot defeated top players, including Novak Djokovic, on his way to securing the trophy by defeating his cousin Arthur Rinderknech in the final.
While Isner argued that Vacherot’s feat surpassed Raducanu’s US Open win due to its improbability, Wozniacki disagreed, emphasizing that claiming a Grand Slam title is the pinnacle of success in tennis.
Wozniacki, a former Australian Open champion who retired in 2022 but later made a comeback in 2023, highlighted the significance of winning a Grand Slam over other tournament victories. Raducanu, on the other hand, admitted to struggling with comparisons to her US Open triumph and the pressure that comes with it.
Speaking to The Guardian in August, Raducanu shared her ongoing challenge of dealing with the aftermath of her historic victory. She acknowledged trying therapy but found it unhelpful due to the uniqueness of her experience, opting to rely on self-reflection and resilience instead.
