Police have provided an important update regarding a British sailor who went missing over a month ago. Investigators suspect that James Nunan, 34, may have had an accident while sailing from Gran Canaria, Spain, to a nearby island after a night out. It is believed that Nunan fell from the mast of his yacht and ended up in the sea.
Initially, Nunan was last seen at a kebab shop in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, after socializing at an Irish pub. His family, deeply concerned, traveled to the island and met with Civil Guard investigators. A new sighting was reported on August 19 when Nunan informed the police about his missing passport.
The yacht, which Nunan intended to sail to Brazil during his solo trip, was found around 50 miles off Gran Canaria, far from where he had originally anchored it in mid-August. His dog, Thumbelina, was found alone on the vessel and taken to an animal shelter.
Authorities are focusing on the theory that Nunan may have fallen from the mast due to the absence of his life jacket and climbing equipment. While investigating, police obtained permission to track his phone and electronic devices. The case is being handled by Court of Instruction Number Three in Las Palmas.
Nunan had docked his yacht in Las Isletas, Las Palmas, before being spotted at Paddy’s Anchor pub. He was recorded on a Facebook Live video near Las Palmas city center. His belongings were reportedly stolen outside a kebab shop, and he was last seen reporting his missing passport at a police station.
Family members expressed the toll the search has taken on them, with his half-sister describing it as emotionally and physically draining. Nunan had plans to visit Lanzarote before crossing the Atlantic to Brazil.
