In a global context, approximately 50 billion single-use beverage cups are discarded annually, contributing to environmental pollution by littering various landscapes and water bodies. These cups, especially those with plastic linings, decompose slowly, releasing harmful microplastics that endanger wildlife and contaminate water systems.
A groundbreaking initiative in Aarhus, Denmark, has introduced a city-wide reusable drinks program to combat this crisis effectively. By utilizing 27 conveniently located deposit machines, residents can return used cups for cleaning and redistribution, preventing them from accumulating in landfills and causing environmental harm.
The system operates seamlessly, with a nominal deposit fee of around 80 pence refunded directly to the user’s bank account upon cup return. Since its inception 18 months ago, over 1.25 million cups have been successfully retrieved, equivalent to diverting 16 tonnes of waste from disposal bins. The high return rate of 88% underscores the program’s success, prompting interest from other cities like Lisbon to adopt similar models.
With a target to collect 1.5 million cups by 2025, and plans to expand into other food packaging solutions, Aarhus aims to minimize waste generation significantly. This endeavor aligns with the vision of creating a waste-free city, as articulated by Simon Smedegaard Rossau, the project manager for circular systems in Aarhus, who emphasized the imperative to combat microplastic pollution.

The successful implementation of similar schemes across Europe demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of such programs in reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices.
