Reports indicate that Bashar Al-Assad, the former president of Syria, was allegedly targeted in an assassination attempt while in Russia, where he sought political asylum following his removal from power ten months ago.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, citing a “private source,” Assad was discharged from a hospital on the outskirts of Moscow on Monday. The undisclosed source stated that Assad had been poisoned as part of the assassination plot, with the aim of implicating the Russian government in his demise.
It was reported that only Assad’s brother Maher Assad was permitted to visit him in the hospital under tight security measures. The current status of Assad’s health is said to be “stable.” The Russian government has not issued any official statements regarding these allegations.
The new leadership in Syria has formally requested the extradition of Assad, a request that Russia has consistently denied. President Putin personally granted asylum to Assad, his family members, and associates from his regime. Since his arrival in Russia, Assad, aged 60, has not made any public appearances and is believed to be closely monitored by Russian intelligence services.
As of now, there is no independent confirmation of Assad being poisoned. An earlier unverified report suggested that Assad had expressed feelings of illness and breathing difficulties to his security shortly after relocating to Russia. However, this account remains unverified.
