“Hamilton’s 73 ‘Til Infinity: Celebrating Hip-Hop Culture”

Must Read

This weekend in Hamilton, streets will transform into a stage as dancers from the region come together to celebrate hip-hop culture. The 73 ‘Til Infinity: Outdoor Dance Series was launched in 2023 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, paying homage to 1973, the year often credited as the birth of hip-hop. Now in its fourth year, this free event includes dance performances, workshops, a block party, and an all-styles dance battle.

According to Josh Taylor, the artistic director of Defining Movement Dance and the curator of 73 ‘Til Infinity, the event highlights street dance culture. The festivities kicked off on Tuesday with free workshops on King William Street, coinciding with hip-hop’s birthday. The weekend will feature a block party on Friday and a dance battle on Saturday, putting the spotlight on dancers and various dance styles.

The Menjivar sisters, Claris and Amelia, who have been part of 73 ‘Til Infinity since its inception, emphasize the importance of understanding the cultural roots of hip-hop. They stress that hip-hop’s history, originating from Black and marginalized communities, is integral to participating in the culture and appreciating its significance.

The upcoming events will showcase street-dance styles such as breaking, locking, popping, and whacking. Claris underscores the need to grasp the historical context of hip-hop, stating that it serves as a means for people to connect with a culture shaped by oppressed communities.

The block party on Friday will feature performances by dancers from Hamilton and the GTA, while Saturday’s highlight will be an all-styles dance battle judged by Suga Pop, a renowned street dancer with a rich history in the industry. The competition will require dancers to improvise in response to live music, with the winner receiving a cash prize.

Despite being overshadowed by Toronto at times, Hamilton boasts a vibrant dance community encompassing various styles. Taylor acknowledges the supportive and close-knit nature of Hamilton’s dance scene, emphasizing the sense of camaraderie within the city’s dancers.

73 ‘Til Infinity aims to showcase this spirit of community and inclusivity. The Menjivar sisters stress that the event provides a welcoming space for everyone, regardless of their dance experience, encouraging participation and fostering a sense of belonging in the hip-hop culture.
