“Obstacles Ahead: Drivers Miss Practice at Abu Dhabi GP”

Must Read

Oscar Piastri faces obstacles in his bid for the Formula 1 championship this weekend as he, along with eight other drivers, will miss the first practice session at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix due to a regulation introduced in 2025.

The upcoming race at the Yas Marina Circuit will determine the season’s champion, with Piastri, Lando Norris, and Max Verstappen contending for the top honors. While a podium finish for Norris could secure him the title, any errors on his part could provide opportunities for his rivals.

Given the significance of the Abu Dhabi race, it is crucial for drivers to maximize their practice time. Nearly half of the grid will be absent from the initial hour of running due to a rule mandating teams to offer chances to rookie drivers.

Throughout the season, each team must include a rookie driver in two free practice sessions per car, totaling four sessions per team. Several teams still need to meet their rookie session requirements, leading to the inclusion of new faces in FP1 this weekend.

Piastri is among the drivers being substituted, with Pato O’Ward taking his place at McLaren. Additionally, Lewis Hamilton will not participate in the session as Ferrari announced that Arthur Leclerc will replace him.

Various other changes will occur, with drivers like Arvid Lindblad, Ayumu Iwasa, and Ryo Hirakawa stepping in for their respective teammates in the first practice session. The weekend will also see Alex Albon being replaced by Luke Browning and Aston Martin providing opportunities for Cian Shields and Jak Crawford.

Alpine will field Paul Aron for his fifth FP1 outing of the season, filling in for Pierre Gasly. Meanwhile, Mercedes and Sauber have already completed their rookie practice session requirements.

Abu Dhabi is a popular location for rookie sessions, particularly as it marks the end of the season. FP1 occurs under daytime conditions, which differ from those during qualifying and the race. These sessions are crucial for the growth of young drivers, with many advancing to full-time positions based on their performance. Drivers like Kimi Antonelli and Oliver Bearman secured positions for 2025 after participating in practice sessions last season.
