“Son Forgives Mother’s Killer, Pleads Against Execution”

Must Read

The individual who committed a heinous act resulting in the death of a woman was forgiven by her son, who pleaded for the cancellation of the planned execution.

Back in 1997, Geoffrey West, then 21, fatally shot Margaret Parrish Berry, 33, while robbing a gas station in Alabama. Berry, a mother of two, was tragically shot as she lay behind the counter.

Expressing deep regret, West has expressed his desire to undo his actions. At the time of his mother’s murder, Will Berry was only 11 years old and has since corresponded with West.

Despite the tragic events, both West and Berry have reached a point of forgiveness and expressed a wish to meet. However, their request to meet has been denied by prison authorities. As West’s scheduled execution by nitrogen gas approached in Alabama, the two shared letters.

Berry stated, “I forgive this individual and do not wish for his death. I do not seek retribution from the state on behalf of my mother or my family.”

Berry has been an outspoken opponent of the death penalty, a practice still in place in Alabama among 27 other U.S. states.

The prosecution alleged that Berry’s murder was an attempt to eliminate witnesses to the robbery. West was found guilty of capital murder during a robbery, with a jury voting 10-2 in favor of the death penalty.

West, now 50, has admitted to the murder, attributing it to financial desperation with his girlfriend. He struggles to comprehend his actions at 21, expressing remorse daily.

Governor Kay Ivey responded to Berry’s plea, acknowledging his perspective but highlighting the state’s adherence to laws sanctioning death for severe crimes.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall’s office emphasized the severity of the crime, stating that West, who has been on death row for 26 years, was due for execution.
