Spain and Italy will compete in the Davis Cup final on Sunday. The tournament, known for its prestige, faced controversy earlier this year after an incident involving Zizou Bergs and Cristian Garin.
The clash occurred during the first round of qualifying between Belgium and Chile in February. Bergs, a Belgian player, knocked Garin to the ground while celebrating a break of serve. Garin then refused to continue the match despite being evaluated by a doctor, leading to a penalty and victory for Belgium.
The match had been intense, with Bergs breaking serve to take a lead in the third set. As he celebrated, he accidentally collided with Garin, causing the Chilean player to fall. Although cleared to continue by a doctor, Garin chose not to, resulting in penalties against him.
The International Tennis Federation stated that the decision was made based on rules and procedures after considering all the facts. Garin expressed disappointment with the outcome and criticized the ITF’s handling of the situation.
Bergs received a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct, with the umpire describing the incident as an unfortunate accident. Bergs apologized for the unintended collision, expressing regret for the outcome and showing respect to Garin and his team.
The incident stirred emotions, with Garin posting a photo on Instagram showing a black eye. Despite the disappointment, he thanked supporters and vowed to move forward.
