“Toronto’s Cabbagetown Faces Traffic Woes Amid Construction”

Must Read

Residents in Toronto’s Cabbagetown-South St. James Town area are feeling the impact of ongoing construction projects on Wellesley and Carlton Streets. Wellesley Street has been reduced to one westbound lane between Parliament and Jarvis since May, while Carlton Street has a single eastbound lane between Yonge and Church. These projects have caused traffic disruptions and frustrations for locals navigating the area.

Sue Leaman, a regular Carlton streetcar commuter, expressed concern over the prolonged construction, stating that it has significantly affected travel in the region for two consecutive summers. Nearby resident Sandra Kirstin echoed these sentiments, highlighting the inconvenience caused by sidewalk closures and expressing frustration at the lack of coordination between the two projects.

City officials, including traffic czar Andrew Posluns, acknowledge the challenges of managing multiple infrastructure upgrades simultaneously. They aim to minimize disruptions by coordinating various repair works, such as water main replacements and track repairs, to streamline the construction process. Despite efforts to synchronize projects, experts like Matti Siemiatycki note a persistent lack of coordination, suggesting improved funding and extended working hours for contractors could expedite project completion.

While recent successful projects, like the accelerated construction on the Gardiner Expressway, demonstrate the benefits of focused efforts and increased resources, others emphasize the need for a balance between construction necessities and public accessibility. The construction on Wellesley and Carlton Streets is projected to conclude by December, offering relief to affected residents and commuters.
