I recently returned from providing essential assistance to emergency responders and union members in the Donbas area of Ukraine. Despite facing daily challenges such as power outages, missile attacks, and civilian casualties, the Ukrainian people remain strong and resolute in their desire for peace while refusing to succumb to Russian occupation.
During my visit to the Save Ukraine center, I encountered children who had been rescued from the occupied territories, with alarming reports indicating that one in ten children had experienced sexual abuse. The number of children abducted by Russia, which exceeds 20,000, suggests a widespread occurrence of child abuse.
The situation is further complicated by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich’s reluctance to transfer £2.5 billion from the Chelsea FC sale to aid Ukraine, as he battles over frozen assets in Jersey with the support of a member of the Conservative Shadow Cabinet, Lord Wolfson KC. This association raises concerns given Abramovich’s status as a sanctioned individual with close ties to Putin.
The involvement of Lord Wolfson and former Trump adviser Eric Herschmann in Abramovich’s legal dispute indicates a concerning normalization of dealings with Russian oligarchs, especially in light of ongoing conflicts and human rights abuses in Ukraine. The lack of decisive action in addressing this issue reflects poorly on the current Conservative leadership under Kemi Badenoch.
The Labour government is urged to take decisive action by introducing emergency legislation to prevent sanctioned oligarchs from exploiting the UK legal system and redirect nearly £30 billion in frozen Russian assets towards aiding Ukraine. Solidarity with Ukraine is crucial as they face ongoing challenges in their fight for democracy.
To express support for Ukraine, a gathering is scheduled outside Tory Headquarters on Wednesday 7 January at 5 pm. It is essential to hold accountable those involved in enabling the actions of sanctioned individuals like Abramovich.
