A tragic incident occurred when a man lost his life as the garbage bin he had entered was emptied into a truck. The victim, Vitalij Maceljuch, a 36-year-old Czech national originally from Ukraine, was found inside the bin near a Wren store in Chester after likely falling asleep inside it.
Despite the bin being checked, including shaking it to ensure it was empty, the contents, including Vitalij, were inadvertently dumped into a Biffa lorry and crushed. His body was later discovered at the Thorncliffe waste management site in Flintshire, where it was mistaken for a mannequin by staff before the grim truth was revealed at Ruthin Coroner’s Court.
Assistant coroner David Lewis stated that Vitalij, who had a history of drug use in North Wales and Cheshire, had traces of cannabis and amphetamine in his system at the time of his death. Pathologist Dr Jonathan Medcalf suggested that the substances might have influenced his actions leading up to the tragic event.
The investigation revealed severe head and neck injuries, with the Health and Safety Executive noting the presence of a warning sign indicating the potential danger of death on the bin. CCTV footage captured Vitalij entering the bin around 4 am, likely due to the sedative effects of the drugs he had consumed.
Ultimately, the HSE concluded that neither the driver nor the waste companies involved were responsible for the incident. The coroner ruled the death as a misadventure, determining that Vitalij had died at the skip site at Alltami on May 10, the previous year. It was speculated that his demise occurred before his body reached that location due to the unintentional consequences of his actions.
The tragic incident bears resemblance to the case of Corrie McKeague, an RAF airman who went missing in 2016. Corrie, hailing from Scotland and stationed near Bury St Edmunds, disappeared under similar circumstances, leading to the theory that he may have met a similar fate after being crushed by a refuse truck and taken to a landfill site.
The details of the unfortunate event serve as a reminder of the dangers associated with such actions and the importance of safety precautions in waste management facilities.
