“NHS Urges Parents to Follow ‘Martha’s Rule’ for Patient Safety”

Must Read

The NHS is advising parents to adhere to a critical guideline known as ‘Martha’s Rule’. This life-saving rule is designed to promptly identify deteriorating conditions in hospital patients and is applicable to all patients. Parents are encouraged to trust their instincts and speak up if they observe any concerning changes in their child’s health while in the hospital.

According to NHS England, Martha’s Rule is a patient safety initiative aimed at early detection of deterioration by ensuring that the concerns of patients, families, caregivers, and staff are acknowledged and acted upon. It was developed following the tragic death of Martha Mills, highlighting the importance of promptly addressing worsening conditions based on patient, family, and caregiver feedback.

Recognizing that those closest to the patient may notice early signs of deterioration, Martha’s Rule emphasizes the significance of listening to and addressing the concerns raised by patients, families, and caregivers. This initiative is being implemented in both adult and children’s inpatient settings across England.

Martha Mills tragically passed away in 2021 due to sepsis complications while hospitalized for a cycling-related pancreatic injury. Despite her family’s repeated alerts about her deteriorating condition, their concerns went unaddressed. A coroner’s report in 2023 indicated that Martha, aged 13, could have survived if transferred to intensive care earlier. This led to the introduction of ‘Martha’s Rule’ across the NHS to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The key aspects of Martha’s Rule include urging parents to be vigilant for warning signs and offering 24/7 access to rapid reviews by contacting the hospital’s dedicated service. A rapid review involves a specialized team collaborating with the patient’s care team to provide necessary treatment or further assessments.
