“4.6-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes San Francisco Residents”

Must Read

San Francisco experienced a significant earthquake early this morning, registering a magnitude of 4.6, which triggered the local earthquake early warning system. Residents reported feeling strong tremors that caused their homes to shake and dishes to fall. Authorities advised residents to stay alert for aftershocks and potential hazards, although no injuries have been reported so far.

According to the US Geological Survey, there is a possibility of more earthquakes measuring magnitude 4 or higher in the coming week. The likelihood of a subsequent tremor is estimated at four percent, with a one percent chance of a magnitude 5 quake, which could result in substantial damage.

Social media was abuzz with San Franciscans sharing their experiences of the earthquake, with one individual describing clinging to their couch during the tremors. The San Francisco Fire Department confirmed no damage or injuries directly linked to the earthquake, emphasizing the importance of remaining cautious in the aftermath.

The earthquake intensity scale indicated that areas including Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco felt “light” to “moderate” shaking. The Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale defines “moderate” shaking as being felt by most people, capable of waking individuals from sleep and causing unstable objects to overturn. This level of shaking can mimic the impact of a heavy vehicle hitting a building and may cause visible shaking of vehicles.

The 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck San Francisco early in the morning, triggering the MyShake early warning app, which provides earthquake alerts across California, Oregon, and Washington. MyShake utilizes data from the US Geological Survey and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services to notify residents of potential seismic activity.

The earthquake, recorded at 2:56 am, occurred near the UC Berkeley campus. The US National Tsunami Center clarified that there was no expectation of a tsunami following the earthquake. The United States Geological Survey reported that a magnitude 4.6 earthquake shook the San Francisco region just before 3 a.m. on Monday, waking residents in the area.
