“Seasalter Residents Fear Property Loss Amid Coastal Erosion”

Must Read

Residents of Seasalter, a coastal village near Whitstable, are apprehensive about the potential loss of their homes and a significant decrease in property value, with some estimating losses of up to £600,000. The seaside location poses challenges as properties along the 1.4-mile shoreline are vulnerable to storm impacts, exacerbated by the gradual reduction of protective barriers by the Environment Agency.

Alex West, a resident facing these challenges, shared his concerns about the deteriorating situation. He described the distress of living in a property that feels like being on a boat due to waves crashing against the windows. The property, passed down through generations, has required constant makeshift flood defenses to mitigate the risks posed by rising tides.

The issue extends to approximately 65 properties situated on the seaward side, all facing the threat of erosion and inundation. The declining property values have forced some residents to consider selling at significantly reduced prices, while others remain determined to stay despite the looming risks.

Local authorities, represented by Councillor Naomi Smith and Ward Councillor Charlotte Cornell, acknowledge the impending challenges and the need for preparedness. Discussions are ongoing with the Environment Agency to address potential evacuation procedures and disaster protocols, ensuring residents are informed and ready for any emergencies.

Looking ahead, the Environment Agency’s long-term plan involves transitioning towards “managed realignment” from 2055 onwards, which entails abandoning current sea defenses and redirecting the sea inland. This proactive approach aims to adapt to the changing coastal landscape and mitigate risks associated with future climate impacts.
