The tragic incident occurred on a cold March night in 1922 in the Bavarian village of Kaifeck, where Andreas Gruber, his wife Cäzilia, their daughter Viktoria Gabriel, Viktoria’s children Cäzilia and Josef, and their maid Maria Baumgartnerwere were all killed in a vicious assault.
The perpetrator, wielding a mattock similar to a pickaxe, lured each victim to the barn individually before stacking their bodies and taking up residence in the family’s home, consuming their food, tending to their livestock, and even using their fireplace.
